Two Russell Group universities are the latest to agree a deal to make a deal with the Co-op, with stores there set to open in time for the new academic year in Birmingham and Glasgow.
The move will enhance grocery convenience on campus, with their range and value designed to cater to the needs of the diverse student, research and teaching population that make up university life.
The stores will operate as a Co-op franchise at the Universities of Glasgow and Birmingham, with both sites part of the Russell Group.
The stores will have “a strong focus on quick and easy customer service,” Co-op said, with self-service till points designed to conveniently serve the student population during high foot-traffic times of day.
Co-op already has stores with the group located on campuses in Leeds, Newcastle and Warwick – the latter being the largest Co-op store at an educational institution. The two new stores will take the total number of Co-op’s university campus stores to 14.
Co-op’s campus stores already serve an estimated university population of more than 200,000 (up 25% to year-end December) – a figure which is expected to exceed 300,000 during 2026.
Jonathan Perry, head of franchise development at Co-op, said: “These stores are designed to become genuine campus hubs, offering quality products, great value with a proposition tailored to the pace and needs of university life. Whether people are studying, living, working or visiting, Co‑op is focused on bringing the benefits of Co-op membership to more locations and, serving and supporting diverse and dynamic campus communities.”
