Too Good To Go has revealed the shocking amount of waste from Easter treats like hot cross buns.

New research from Too Good To Go, the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food, highlights that millions of hot cross buns are being thrown away after Easter celebrations have ended.

The average household buys around six hot cross buns in the lead-up to Easter, yet over half of Brits (54%) admit they end up with leftovers.

This overbuying adds up: with an estimated 3.5m people across the UK throwing hot cross buns away each year.

Too Good To Go’s research shows one in 12 hot cross buns purchased are ultimately discarded. Nearly 40% of these go stale before they’re eaten, while others are left behind because people simply bought too many (18%) or missed their best-before date (24%).

These figures reveal a clear gap between our intentions and what actually gets eaten during the Easter season.

Many of these leftover buns could be saved through simple habits such as freezing, toasting, repurposing into recipes, or through purchasing fewer buns, and rescuing surplus instead.

Too Good To Go partners with businesses to rescue seasonal items such as surplus hot cross buns and redistribute them via Surprise Bags, which Brits can pick up as required via its app.

Chelsea Kerr, UK & Ireland MD at Too Good To Go, added: “Hot cross buns are an Easter favourite, but with more than half of Brits admitting they end up with leftovers, it’s clear we need to rethink how we enjoy these seasonal treats. We partner with bakeries and more to rescue surplus food during these peak periods, giving more people the chance to enjoy these delicious products while helping prevent good food from going to waste.”
