Philip Morris & Son’s John Jones is leaving his role at Bira after two years.

Independent retailers must keep evolving and innovating to survive and thrive, according to the outgoing president of the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira).

John Jones, of Philip Morris & Son, has now stepped down after two years as president of Bira, which works with over 6,000 independent retailers across the UK. Karen Forret of Wilkies Trading took over the role at Bira’s AGM this month.

Jones said: “It’s been a huge honour to serve as President of Bira. For independent retailers, the lack of growth in the economy and the political decisions forced upon us have not made it an easy two years. These challenges show more than ever why our sector needs an organisation like Bira to collectively achieve what we can’t do individually.”

Still optimistic

Jones added that despite the pressures facing the sector, he remains optimistic about the future of the high street: “People value the sense of place and community the high street provides, as well as the knowledge and service an independent retailer offers. We need genuine business rates reform and an overhaul of the planning rules to let the high street thrive again.

“Small businesses can be more nimble than their bigger counterparts, and we need to use that to our advantage. Philip Morris & Son is 180 years old, but the business as it is now in no way resembles the one it was originally. I think the key to surviving and thriving is evolving.”

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, concluded: “On behalf of everyone at Bira, I want to thank John for everything he’s given to the role over the last two years.

“He’s led us through a really tough period for independent retail, always with the interests of members at heart, and the launch of the forum will be a lasting part of his legacy. I’m delighted he will remain involved as Karen takes on the role.”
