The Scottish Grocers Federation (SGF) has announced the appointment of Co-op’s operations director, Kate McCrae, as the next vice president of the trade association’s national executive board.

McCrae will take up the role from 18 November at the SGF Annual Conference, replacing the current VP, BP’s central operations director, Andrew Kenney, who will now take up his post as the SGF’s president for two years.

Kate has more than 25 years’ experience leading large-scale, customer-facing organisations, and her responsibilities as operations director span Co-op’s store network and 42,000 colleagues.

Absolute delight

Announcing the appointment, Dr Pete Cheema OBE, chief executive of the SGF, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Kate has agreed to become the SGF’s next vice president.

“Bringing tremendous experience, energy and credibility to the position. Kate understands retail from the shop floor through to the very highest levels of strategic and operational leadership.

“At a time when our sector continues to face many challenges, both commercial and regulatory, Kate’s perspective will be hugely valuable to the SGF and our members.

“It’s vital the SGF continues to have experienced, forward-looking leadership and I very much look forward to working with Kate as we continue to strengthen and modernise the Federation.”

“Convenience retail is an industry I’m incredibly passionate about…”

McCae added: “I’m truly honoured to be appointed as vice president and would like to thank Pete, Andy and the board for their support. Convenience retail is an industry I’m incredibly passionate about, and I’m proud to have the opportunity to represent a sector that plays such an important role in the lives of customers and communities every day.

“Throughout my career, I’ve seen the resilience, innovation and dedication that exists across our industry, and I’m looking forward to working with SGF colleagues, members and partners to help champion the issues that matter most to retailers.

“Together, we have a real opportunity to strengthen our sector’s voice, encourage greater diversity and representation and support its continued success for the future.”

Warm welcome

Incoming president and current VP, Andrew Kenney, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Kate as the SGF’s next vice president. Her passion for our sector, extensive operational experience and commitment to the communities we serve will be a real asset to us all. I’m very much looking forward to working alongside her as we build on the SGF’s strong foundations and continue to champion the industry across Scotland.”

McCrae’s appointment also marks an important milestone for the SGF, as the first female vice president. Following two years in the role, Kate will than take up the position of its first female president.
