The total weight of the KitKats stolen last week totalled 12 tons.

Confectioner Nestlé has responded to reports over 400,000 KitKats were stolen en route from its production site in Italy last week.

The bars, which were due to be distributed across Europe, were said to total 12 tons in weight, and were initially destined for Poland.

The company, based in Switzerland, initially said in a statement Friday that “the vehicle and its load are still nowhere to be found.” It’s believed the haul also contained some of the new limited Formula 1 bars.

The fear is that the bars could now enter illicit sales channels across the market. However, all can be traced via their batch codes, Nestlé explained. If a match is found, clear instructions on how to alert the company will be provided, and Nestlé will then share the evidence.

In a new statement, the supplier has now said: “We are working closely with local authorities and supply chain partners to investigate. The good news is there are no concerns for consumer safety and supply is not affected.”
