The first 5p coins featuring King Charles III enter select Post Offices
A handful of Post Offices with ‘oak’ names will be the first to get the new 5p coins
The Royal Mint has today (23 October) announced that 23.2 million King Charles III’s first 5p coins are entering circulation across the UK.
The coins, dated and minted in October 2023, are being released due to increased demand for the 5p denomination, marking “a significant milestone in British numismatic history,” it says.
This represents the first time the 5p denomination has entered circulation bearing His Majesty King Charles III’s official portrait. The release creates another opportunity for coin collectors and the public to find these historic pieces in their everyday change.
The Royal Mint has allocated a special quantity to Post Office branches with ‘oak’ in their name, creating a unique connection between the coin’s design and its distribution

The eight lucky stores getting coins include branches in Braintree, Southampton, Sutton Coldfield, Brighton and more.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at The Royal Mint, said: “We’re delighted to see His Majesty’s first 5p coins entering circulation following public demand. The oak leaf design beautifully represents the deep connection between our monarchy and the natural world, reflecting King Charles III’s lifelong dedication to environmental conservation.
“These coins offer the public a wonderful opportunity to discover a piece of living history in their everyday change, and for many, finding one of these special coins could be the beginning of a fascinating journey into the world of coin collecting.”
