Retail crime remains one of the biggest challenges facing every convenience operator, but increasingly stores are using AI technology in an attempt to tackle issues before they arise.
One particular store, run by Priyesh Vekaria in Salford near Manchester, spoke to us recently about the tech developments he already had in place with a new radio system that could help deter shoplifters.
Now, the Convenience Award winner One Stop Carlton Convenience has taken things a step further, as Priyesh explained exclusively to Convenience Store. “We experience the same patterns most retailers see - small concealments, walkouts and organised theft attempts,” he said.
Now though, his store employs tech supplied by Retail AI, which has marked a change already, Priyesh said. “The real shift has come from how quickly we can now detect, respond and de-escalate incidents. We’re identifying suspicious behaviour early and using real-time prompts to take safe, proactive action.”
But how exactly does the system work? Priyesh explains: “We’ve implemented a layered AI security stack through Retail AI’s RaiD10 platform, which uses computer vision to identify high-risk behaviours, trigger smart audio prompts in real time and send alerts directly to staff handhelds.
“In addition, automatic number plate recognition at the store frontage helps track repeat offenders, and every event is logged into a secure, GDPR-compliant evidence bank. The system doesn’t replace people - it supports them, reducing the pressure on staff and improving safety across the board.”

Priyesh adds that, even after just a few weeks, he’s seen results from the system. “The results have been clear and measurable. We’ve seen earlier interventions, cleaner evidence packs, faster escalation when needed and a visible drop in theft incidents. Most importantly, staff confidence has grown. They feel supported rather than exposed. The technology empowers them to act safely.”
Perhaps as a result, Priyesh believes AI can also help with other, perhaps more mundane store tasks. “It supports several functions, from age estimation to task automation and range optimisation. It helps identify high-traffic times, optimises layout flow, and ensures compliance checks are carried out efficiently. We’re not chasing novelty - we’re using AI where it adds real operational value.
When asked about the reaction from shoppers to the new system, Priyesh said the tech hasn’t been an imposition for them.
“People want to feel safe when they visit their local store and transparency helps.”
“The vast majority of shoppers are positive. People want to feel safe when they visit their local store and transparency helps. We communicate clearly that these systems protect both colleagues and customers. Once explained, shoppers see it as an investment in their safety and community, not an invasion of privacy.”
Priyesh adds that while the system will soon pay for itself for him, a structured roll out using existing equipment means “it’s scalable for other retailers too.”
Looking forwards, next up for Priyesh’s store is a new app-based system which will include functionality even further, he says. “Retail AI is set to release a platform that gives retailers and their teams direct access to real-time operational visibility. For the first time, every level of the store, from shop floor assistant to supervisor and manager, can be connected, accountable and aligned through one interface.
“It’s not about surveillance. It’s about empowering teams to deliver excellence through visibility and rhythm.”
“This is a game changer for operational culture. It blends behavioural insight with task discipline, keeping everyone focused, productive, and consistent. It’s not about surveillance. It’s about empowering teams to deliver excellence through visibility and rhythm.”
You might not be surprised to hear that Priyesh recommends this technology to other retailers, albeit with a caveat: “They should start by identifying their key operational pain points, then pilot AI in one area and train your staff thoroughly - and track data from day one.
“AI only works when it’s guided by clear purpose and people who understand its value. Once that’s in place, it doesn’t just reduce crime. It transforms culture, consistency and confidence across your entire operation.”
