With the summer holidays now upon us, many shoppers will be heading to parks and beaches for outdoor dining, or firing up the barbecue in their gardens.
But a new study from Fruity King has shown a dramatic rise in the cost of such endeavours, revealing the average cost to cook a basic summer barbecue is now almost £78, over 50% more expensive than the figure of £51 back in 2021.
Perhaps understandably, it’s the discounters that are offering the cheapest options, and Waitrose top the list. However, the study also showed that the Co-op is now one of the costliest options for a summer barbecue shop, with a total of £84.81.
According to the study, the Co-op has the most expensive prices for a pack of canned beer. The group also has the most expensive prices for five other barbecue items including veggie sausages, corn on the cob and potato salad. Despite this, the Co-op’s price for a pack of four beef burgers beats Aldi by over 40%.
A spokesperson from Fruity King said: “This research demonstrates the UK’s rapid rates of inflation within recent years. It’s shocking to see how the average cost of a basic barbecue has increased by over 50% within just four years, depicting the UK’s ongoing cost-of-living crisis as prices continue to surge.
“It’s also astonishing to see how the cost of a basic barbecue could vary so much. For example, while Aldi is the cheapest supermarket overall, the Co-op actually has a better deal on beef burgers. Signing up for cashback and loyalty schemes is also saving shoppers a fortune in the long run.”
